“What a conundrum………”

Aeolos Mareblue Hotel & Resort

We (family of 4) spent the last week of August 2007 here. In some ways this has 4+ star qualities, in other 2 star (my wife actually said she could understand if one person slated the place, while the next raved about it). First the disappointing bits.
The room was very basic with only one wardrobe between the four of us. Not such a problem as we only had a week, but any longer would have been a struggle. The décor is very dour, although we had plenty of room (we had separate bedroom) and it was clean. The beds were firm bordering on concrete; both my wife and I woke at least once every night. The air con was very effective, although only worked if you inserted the room key fob in the switch, which made the room very hot on return from the day or after the evening. The fob does detach from the key, so we ended up leaving it in the switch for the evenings. One good thing is that towels and bed linen can be changed on request as often as required.
The restaurant food was ok, but only ok, although perfectly edible; although the Chef station was good with freshly cooked meats (we had Roast Chicken and Lamb to name but two, both of which were lovely). There seemed to be a lack of staff as most days I had to ask for a table to be laid up and also cleared plates myself as the service was not quick enough. The actual room itself was about the right size, and is light and airy, plus the balcony with the views over the sea was a bonus (although there were a few wasps about and the usual cats).
The reception staff were adequate, nice and smiley when all ok, but not so helpful with problems. My son bought 30 minutes on the PC, but couldn’t get logged in. The lady behind reception told us we must be doing something wrong as it was very simple, and no we couldn’t have a refund, and then started talking to the next guest. When I went to see her, she reluctantly agreed to get someone to come down. Not sure who he was, but when he arrived (20 minutes later) he didn’t seem to impressed to be bothered with such a trivial matter, except the PC had gone wrong and he had to re-boot to get it going correctly. He then left without an apology or smile!
One other thing that was an annoyance was no ‘diet’ drinks in the hotel.
The good bits.
Although the climb from the beach to the room was steep (110 steps got us half way – we were right at the top) the setting is pretty spectacular. As mentioned above the views from the restaurant terrace were great, and the bar on the next level up, were similarly good. The reception area and bar were very pleasant, and the atrium was a nice place to sit for half an hour after dinner. Most of the staff were friendly and did as much as they could to help bearing in mind their lack of numbers. Most of the usual alcoholic drinks were available and there were a few cocktails included in the AI deal. The international brands were a bit restricted in their numbers, but at EUR 3 each, not overly expensive.
The main pool is situated on the hill side and over looks the sea. Plenty of beds and umbrellas and it was well kept in terms of tidiness and cleanliness. There was no music playing, but the bar was good with decent snacks throughout most of the day, and freshly cooked chips to order.
The beach was very good. Nice sand with stones at the waters edge. The water was exceptionally clear and nice and warm, even at 150 meters out from the shore, the seabed was visible. The waterslide into the sea is good fun (kids only though). The landing area is a little on the shallow side and there is no real supervision, but otherwise our two loved it. The beach bar is fantastic!! All the same AI facilities, excellent pizza and chips, fresh fruit, plus fresh pasta cooked to order while you waited. At all the bars, free beach towels are available (after a EUR 1O deposit per towel is paid at reception (voucher system)) and can be exchanged for clean towels as often as you like.
Not much around the hotel, Benitsis is really a cab/bus ride away (the road is not easily walked) Cab was EUR 8, the bus EUR 0.75 each. There is a supermarket opposite the main entrance, get your water here, EUR 0.60 vs EUR 2.00 in the hotel.
Despite everything, I think I’d give the holiday itself proberbly 6 and a bit/10, and if asked I’d genuinely say we had a nice time. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, although it was considerably cheaper that other hotels we looked at, so I guess you pay your money and make your choice.

“Lovely place to relax”

Just back from a one-week stay in the Aeolos Beach resort and really enjoyed it ! Was a bit cautious after having read some comments on this website but must say I was positively surprised as from day one: very friendly staff at the reception, quick check-in, excellent room (looked recently refurbished, except the bathroom) in a bungalow near the lagoon-pool, airco working perfect, room cleaned every day even on Sunday (although otherwise stated in the hotel info), delicious food in the main restaurant, nice private beach, hard-working and friendly staff in all the different bars (pool bar, beach bar, lagoon bar) and animation team doing more then its best; Honestly, I don't understand all this negative comments here, especially when you understand that Greece is not Turkey (with its newbuild mass-production hotels and staff that earns probably a fraction of what is considered a normal salary in Europe, so yes you can get easily cheaper deals there); Conclusion: if you like Greece and its islands, its beautiful weather, its culture and its typical atmosphere you certainly gonna love this place !

“Had a great time, don't believe all the bad reviews”

We spent 2 very enjoyable weeks here, we came home on 1 Sept. booked as a last minute deal. 2 adults and 2 children aged 11 and 8.

We found most staff helpful and pleasant. There wasn't a hairdryer in our room on arrival, it took a few visits to reception, but one was delivered after a day or so.

Our room was very basic indeed, but cleaned every day. Fresh towells when you need them. The air conditioning in the room worked brilliantly, it was so cold we had to keep turning it off in the night! One bad point - the door DID lock, but anyone could have broken in by just pulling the door. I did worry that someone could have easily broken into our room. We split our valuables between the safe and also by carrying some around with us just in case.

The view from our room was fabulous and we didin't hear any noise at all - very peaceful and relaxing!

The main pool got a bit crowded and noisy and too deep for our youngest daughter to stand up in. The toilet by the main pool was disgusting - terribly dirty and smelly. Apart from that, the water appeared clean enough and the views from the pool were amazing.

We spent most days at the beach - water very clear and calm. Bit more space to breathe. Felt safe for the children to wander off a little on their own. We preffered the staff at the beach bar/restaurant, they were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the "design your own pasta dish" at lunchtimes and we dined at the a la carte several times and paid for the nice wine. Ok the food wasn't brilliant, but it was a great setting and nice to be away from the main hotel restaurant.

The main hotel restaurant was self service, fair enough choice. I am vegetarian so had lots of salad and bread. It did get a bit repetitive. Food was fresh and cooked well no matter what time you chose to eat there.

Our children liked doing the disco dancing on the stage at the beginning and end of each night. Some nights the entertainment was rubbish, but some of the shows were brilliant. We liked the fire eater and the magician! The girls loved the hotel entertainers - especially Rico and Chris.

We enjoyed sitting on the terrace in the early evening looking at the sea (and the planes from the nearby airport!) with lots of gin and tonics and a bowl of olives - great views.

We ate out in Corfu town a few times and You MUST get the barbequed sweetcorn from the stalls - it's fab..covered in salt.

A holiday is what you make it, yes there were some minor bad points, but we made the most of our time there getting away from our awful weather. We really enjoyed ourselves. Some people just can't help moaning about silly things all the time. It's Greece, very different from Britain.

“terrible hotel”

Aeolos Mareblue Hotel & Resort

We had a good trip to Corfu altho this hotel should be avoided at all costs - there is no way this can qualify as a 4 star!

The rooms do not have air conditioning that works (at least not in the main building) and if it did work, we were rudely informed by the reception staff, that it operates between 3pm and 11pm which makes the nights unbearable. (numerous other groups complained about thsi so I know it was not just our room)

The TV didn' t work at all.

The room was not cleaned and was very dirty (including graffitti on the walls)

The reception staff were very rude (a shame as all the bar staff were extremely friendly)

It's also worth noting that this hotel is extremely noisy. Again, if you're in the main building, expect to be woken up by buses and cars that seem to arrive throughout night (is like sleeping in a car park) and also the laundry truck that arrives at 6.30/7 each morning creating a helluva racket for 1/2 hour or so.

i could go on but just do yourselves a favour and dont book this hotel.

“Friendly Staff, Lovely Hotel.”

Went for a week and overall it was very good. It's a perfect place to go if you want a relaxing beach/pool type holiday in beautiful surroundings. One of the best things about the hotel is the staff that went out of their way to be helpful and they always seemed genuinely happy to help. The hotel also has a mini bus, which can take you down to the beach or other parts of the complex, which was particularly useful as one of our party was using crutches.

Room
Very clean with sheets, towels changed everyday (expect Sunday). Lovely views from the balcony of the ocean.

Beach
Clean, private with lots of sun beds and you can get fresh beach towels everyday from the beach bar. (Deposit needed which you get back at the end of your holiday) There are also pedal boats etc… to hire, or water skiing for the brave!

Pools
Two pools - the small one gets busy with small children splashing around. The large pool is stunning and deep on purpose (no shallow end) as it is considered a pool for adults but children are welcome.

Food
As a vegan I was expecting very little choice but was pleasantly surprised at the choice available. So vegetarians / meat eaters will have no problems at all. Having said that after a week as with most buffet style set ups it can become a bit samey, so I recommend you eat out a few times in Corfu Town or Benitses.

You can also get a limited number of snacks from the pool / beach bars. Sandwiches, pizza, chips, cheese pies. (not that I would eat any of this stuff!)

Drink
I would have to say I found the drinks on the disappointing side. The soft drinks like coke, fanta where fine but full sugar and the fruit juices where watered down cordials (yuck!). I stuck to the soda water. The wine was poor (the white wine is best used as vinegar), the red just about drinkable. The beer was fine. The cocktails varied but all tasted a bit sweet and not that nice (cheap for lack of a better word!).

Entertainment
The animation team basically provided all the entertainment (apart from one night they had proper Greek dancers) which varied from the surreal to spinal tap like moments . They did try hard so you will find yourself routing for them rather than cringing.

Staff
Very helpful and always friendly. Made you feel like a wanted guest rather than a pest.

In summary a great place to relax and unwind. If you want to get out of the hotel then go to Benitses or enjoy Corfu Town which has lots to see and do.
