“We can't wait to come back!!!”

Wow, where do I begin... I guess I'm going to start by thanking the rest of the people that took their time in writing their reviews both good & bad because it really helped us prepare ourselves and we knew exactly what to expect prior to going there. So I'm writing my own review to return the favour and hopefully whoever is reading this that has not been there would find this helpful & informative as well:)

My boyfriend & I went there during the Canada Day Holiday from June 27 to July 4. A week before leaving Toronto, I practically spent hours going through all the reviews just to be aware of what to expect. One of the reviews that I read said that emailing the resort prior to going there does help in getting a better room so I did. I got exactly what I wanted and they placed us in Bungalow 37 (right behind the pool and activitiy center).

The flight from Toronto did not leave until 4:30 so it was already 9pm when we arrived at Santa Clara Airport. The airport was really small and I knew that because I read a lot of reviews about it and I even thought to myself that atleast that sniff dog that most people wrote about is not there but little did I know, they were just waiting until all the luggages are out and sure enough the black dog came out and started sniffing all the luggages from the conveyor. The bus ride from the airport was approximately 2 hours. It was too bad because it was already night then so it was pitch dark except for the areas when we passed by the towns. When we arrived at the hotel, the entertainers where dancing for us and they handed us a cocktail drink and it was delicious. The bell boy drove us with our luggages into our bungalow in this "golf cart looking" vehicle. You have to hold on tight because they go really fast but it was fun though. He was really nice and he didn't even want us to help him carry our luggages but we helped him anyways because our room was on the 2nd floor (which I requested). We tipped him 2 CUC and he was very grateful in fact he gave us the breakdown of the tipping. He said 1 CUC is the normal and acceptable tip, 2 CUC is for a good service, and 3 CUC is for exceptional service, any more than that is basically up to the guest's discretion.

We basically just changed and went out right away. We headed straight to thedisco and that's where we met our favourite bartended Jorge Luis (he only works every other night). I guess the main advantage that we had is that my boyfriend speaks Spanish fluently, he was originally from Costa Rica. He was able to have real conversation with them. I mean don't get me wrong, they speak English but not as well so they basically keep the conversation short. We got to know Jorge really well and he introduced us to the DJ and his name is Ariel. Please say "hi" to them from Geo & Rachel if you ever get a chance to meet them. That night we also met Alvira as well, she's the head entertainer. She practically took care of us every day and in return I gave her a lot of stuff. By the way, we brought a lot of stuff from home a whole suitcase full and I got that tip from the other reviews that I read. I brought a lot of clothes(both old & new), shoes, my old brand name purses which they love and a lot of women accessories such as hair stuff, belts, cologne and many others. I guess thepeople that were closest to us got most of the stuff but we tried to distribute them equally :)

Here is our routine, we usually woke up around 9am. We can't wake up earlier than that because were usually up until 3 to 4am. One tip, if you don't want to starve make sure to wake up before the buffet breakfast closes at 10am. After 10am there's no food available anywhere until 1pm. Usually after breakfast, we would head directly to the beach and spend a couple of hours there until lunch. By the way, try the hobby cat it was really fun!!! My boyfriend loved the salt water but I didn't so I basically stayed underneath the "palapas" while he was in and out of the water and I actually took a lot of pictures of him. For lunch, you have an option of going into the buffet, beach bar or pizzeria. I would highly recommend the pizzeria and if you like your pizza meaty, try the Santa Maria. They cracked an egg in the middle and I know it sounds weird but it was so delicious. By the way, we met Elsa over there and I think she was the supervisor or something. The funny thing is, she looks exactly like my boyfriend's mom so when we told her that, she asked us to call her "mama" and we loved her as well. Please say "hi" to her for us as well if you have a chance to meet her. If you don't feel like having pizza for lunch, try the beach bar. They serve a good calamari. They also have burgers and fries there. Also, try the beef & chicken fajita, it was good & I loved it. One tip again, if you think you're about to get hungry then you better head to either the pizzeria or beach bar right away. The reason is that they don't really serve as fast as were used to here. They actually called it "Cuban time" and by the time you get your food, you're definitely hungry then. Now if you are one of those people that have no patience then you better just go to the buffet and have your lunch there. Another tip, make sure to eat a little snack before 4pm. There's no food available between 4pm until dinner @ 7. The pizzeria, beach bar and even the pool bar (they mainly serve paninis) all stop serving food by 4pm. After lunch we usually hang out by the pool and the entertainer have a lot of activities which we always participated. They would usually organize salsa dancing lessons, aqua gym and a whole lot of water sports such as volleyball, basketball, water polo and many more. Oh yeah, while sunbathing by the poolside the gardiner would usually pick a coconut for me and he would ask the bartender to spike it with a shot of rum. My boyfriend arranged that with him and I think he gave him about 5 cuc for the whole week. For dinner, you have an option of the buffet again or the a la cart dinner and the options are the Creole or La Fontanella (we liked both). As you can see from my review, we really didn't have a lot of complaints about the food. Obviously not everyone will like everything so we basically chose & picked what we liked and stuck to it which we didn't mind. After dinner, we usually would head directly to the "Piano Bar". I loved the ambiance there. It was lovely & romantic especially with the lady playing the white piano on the background. Jorge is the bartender there as well before he goes to the disco after. He usually gave us the specialty drink. It was very good with minty and it goes down very smooth. After hanging out at the Piano bar for a couple of hours, then it was time to watch the nightly entertainment. It was good overall. The dancers were amazing and the entertainer staff really tried their best to make everyone happy. During the show, the pool bar is still open so you can get your drink there but after the show, the pool bar closes as well. After the show then it's disco time. All the entertainers hang out there as well but they seem to have a curfew because after midnight, they usually all disappear except for the selected few like Elvira and Geraldine(she was a sweetheart as well). It's funny because some nights, they would keep the disco open just for my boyfriend & I and we both love dancing so they would just keep playing Salsa & Merengue so we practically had the dance floor to ourselves, it was fun. After the disco, we would usually head to the 24 hrs front lobby bar. My boyfriend would usually have more drinks but for me it's tea time (I can't sleep without having a cup of tea). I usually have green tea but they've never heard of it so I had Camomille instead which they called it "Mansanilla". After having my tea then it's finally bed time and the whole thing starts all over again the following day.

We didn't get a chance to do any of the tours because our days are very jam packed and we didn't want to be away from the resort. Were definitely coming back there and this time we will be there for 17 days and this time we will definitely go to atleast 2 tours preferrably the jungle tour and the catamaran. The staff were ecstatic when we told them that were coming back if not by Nov then for sure around January. Half of them wants to take us home to Santa Clara so we can see the real Cuba they said and I'm actually looking forward to it.

Overall, we have no complaints about the whole experience but don't get me wrong, I know exactly where the other people that gave bad reviews are coming from. You just have to remember that they are trying their best to please us and they have different standards there. The best way to get the best of it is to be nice to everyone. Don't treat them like they're beneath you or something. I guess what they really liked the most is that we treated them like they are friends or even family. They work very long hours and they truly deserve to be tipped. We can't wait to go back there and this time, we are even bringing some of our family and friends so we can enjoy paradise with them!!!!

“FAR FAR AWAY”

Sol Cayo Santa Maria

I stayed at this hotel in October 2006, i found the booking in long winded and your given a map and expected to find your room, which was very hard to do, i found that it was far far away from anything, there was no way you could take a walk, there was a swamp located across the road from the hotel but was told by staff, that it was full of mosiquitos, i did not go there, the bar service was surposed to be 24 but that was not the case, i found the food alright, but you have to go at the begining of the service otherwise it was cold or gone, the breakfast menu was always the same, i tried a omelet which was night, the rest of the food was sometimes cold, there is a microwave located near the breads/rolls to use to heat up food, the barman at the fruit bar was always helpful, i bought my large insulated mug which i gave him when i arrived in the restaurant and he will fill with whatever i wanted, i was happy to give him some money, because it was nothing compared to the pound and he never changed towards me if i gave him no money, i had two single beds together and one of the legs was broken, i also had a problem with my A/C which meant my room was hotter inside than out, it took a couple of days to sort out, i would advise anyone going to this resort to take a insulated cup large with a screw top, because when you visit the bars you are given a small plastic cup which you have to refill, it is easier and more convientant, i got this tip from this website before my visit and it was very helpful, the only other guest that had these where returning english guests and Canandian's, the food at the beach ran out, and the service at times was a bit slow.
In the grounds at night you can hear frogs, wait till you see them they are giant, i was scared they'd jump on Me!!. There is not much to do during the day, and excursions where very expensive and not very good, however i would visit Cuba again, and stay in nearer to Havana, i hope to stay in a beach resort for 10 days then stay for 3 nights in Havana, i have been told the food is really bad in Havana, but cant wait to see the stage shows.

“Give it a try”

Sol Cayo Santa Maria

For the price, the resort is very, very good. I traveled there with my girlfriend for 7 days in the last week of June. I read almost a hundred reviews on here, so I was both prepared for the bugs and made sure to bring something special for the maid.

ROOM: Our room was in block 57 on the ground floor. We were lucky not to have any unwanted visitors to our room, outside of a little army of ants that came to pick up after the cat [more later]. The room was clean, although slightly humid when left without A/C for long. The patio is amazing, especially on breezy afternoons when you want to escape the sun. The foliage provides shadow and you get to relax without getting sunburned.

FOOD: It's true, the food for the most part is rather bland. There are a few exceptions in the buffet, with the roast and rice dishes as the guys who cooked for us were great. The roast chef even made a special surprise roast for me one night. If you want something really good and don't mind the carbs, try the Pizza at the restaurant by the beach. Delicious. We only managed to go to one a la carte restaurant, the Fontanella, and thought it was standard fare. The selection of fruit and juices in the morning is also very, very good.

STAFF: For the most part, the full spectrum of people working there were great. You'll obviously see some slightly jaded characters in the buffet or in the carts, but it's expected. I get worse service at 5 star hotels in Europe. The Entertainment kids were very nice, while at the same time very forward. I've never had anyone ask me to trade cellphone/shoes/shirts for cigars before. Front desk goes both ways too, I found one girl whose name escapes me right now [she is the smart looking one with glasses] to be very helpful, while some other people didn't seem to care much.

ROOM SERVICE: We made the mistake of not leaving a tip on our first day by accident. If you don't tip you can except the basic service, and you can forget about an extra water bottle. We felt terrible and made up for it with some things we brought from Canada as well as a personalized note, and you can most definitely see the difference. I know some people on here had a problem with this, but you have to understand that the people working on the resort, especially in housekeeping, have fairly low wages and rely on tips in the same way barkeep does in most Western countries.

BEACH: It was my first time playing in the ocean like this, and I thought it was spectacular. We had rough winds for three days, which left the beach a bit dirty in the mornings. All of that was taken care of by an army of six workers who sweated in the wee hours of the morning to make it "tourist worthy".

NAUTICAL CLUB: These guys are really, really nice. Jorge especially. Bring these guys some treats and you'll be sure to get something special in ways of the Hobbie Cat or tours. I lost the mouth piece from the snorkel in the water one day and they actually wandered the beach trying to find it before reluctantly making me pay for it.

NIGHT SHOWS: I only managed to catch one. It was pretty great in a "don't take it too seriously" way. Personal taste is probably the reason. The costumes were great. And all the dancers looked like giants, until I stood next to them and realized how tiny they were.

DISCO: Went there only a few times, it was mostly dead except for our last night when for some reason it really picked up. Karaoke was awesome, if you want to get the party started do Backstreet Boys' "Everybody", seems really popular.

BUGS: The mosquitoes are relentless inland, I don't think I've ever been bitten on the inside of my hand. It's as if they had a personal vendetta against me. Come prepared. It's not insane, but if you're from Canada and like to camp, it'll be the same amount you would normally expect. On breezy nights you can move near the beach or go on your patio where they tend to avoid the wind. Indoors, avoid eating in bed as the tiny housekeeping will most likely find their way into wherever the crumbs lie. Cockroaches, although we didn't have any, will probably do the same thing. I made sure to keep all open foods and snacks in the fridge and threw any "edible" trash into the bathroom bin. No problems.

CATS: Ok, so a lot of people had problems with the cats. Yes, some of them look like they were in a lot of fights. We were lucky to be there when a few kittens were roaming about. One of them lived around our block, 57, and he was very adamant about hanging out and playing. He ran into our room one of our first nights and ran straight into the bathroom. I realized he was thirsty and gave him some water, he drank half a cup! After that we bonded and allowed him to come in for little bits of time for some TLC and food when we snuck it out of the buffet. He is very fond of the roast, as I was, and is definitely worth checking out if you're a cat person. As a thank you gift, he left a frog [slightly dead] on our doorstep one day. How thoughtful!

TRIPS: Take the Katamaran tour, day or night, it's a nice break from the routine of the resort. I wanted to take the daytime tour but it didn't work out, so we did the sunset one instead. Lots of fun, the captain and skipper both were very nice. Lobster dinner is fabulous.

The Santa-Clara/Remedios tour, which we took, would probably be good for those who want to really learn about Che Guevera and see the surrounding area. I am not a fan of guided tours, but it was nice to be ushered around like a tourist and not have to worry about anything.

If you're not licensed and wish to scuba dive, do the intro Tuesdays or Thursdays 2:00 at the pool and book a session. Do it quick too, I ended up losing out because of scheduling.

AND FINALLY,

Remember to have a good time, no matter how things end up for you. Come with an open mind and make sure to say "hola!" to everyone you see. It helps.

This hotel is fantastic, we travelled as a party of 4 adults 1 3 year old and a baby of 10months. The staff couldnt do enough for you and they really deserve the tips as they work such long hours for very little pay. The rooms are very basic but they are clean and we emailed the hotel direct to request 2nd floor rooms which we got.

The mossies are really bad and are out 24/7. June, july and aug are the months when they are worse. Be prepared for them.

The food was great. We loved the pasta bar and the fried rice. The breakfast was good too. They do amazing crepes and the fruit is so good.

The beach is the nicest beach ever its so white and the ocean is so green.

The entertainment staff are great and they work hard to entertain you from morning to night. They are there when you arrive at the hotel in their costumes and when you are leaving they put on a show .

Dont listen to the bad reviews everyone that was there the same time loved it the only thing that put people off were the mossies which is not the hotels fault.

We would go back but not in our summer months.

had a fantastic time at this hotel!!!!!! i went with 6 others including my partner and i can honestly say it was one of the best holidays we have ever had. The people who work at the hotel are brilliant.... they cannot do enough for you and they really made our stay welcome and enjoyable. I wouldn't reccomend this type of holiday to people with small children, it gets very hot around 11am and the mosquito's are quite a pain. I saw a few small children with mosquito bites on their faces and it must of been uncomfortable for them! there is alot of mosquito's, especially at night. we used insect repellent and tried to cover up but we still got bit loads. there is a repellent called repel 100 and we used that towards the end of the holiday and found it to be really good. we would definatly return!!!

ps makek sure you tip the staff.... they work hard!!!!
