“mosquitos!”

Hotelito Desconocido

pros: beautiful location, friendly staff, delicious food, enormous waves, many interesting birds
cons: nothing to do, no swimming allowed in the ocean, very hot with no a/c and intermittently functioning bedside fans, and huge mosquito problem

hotelito would be nice for a couple of nights, with a big group of friends. my husband and i went with the idea of completely relaxing in the middle of nowhere (which it is! about 1.5 hours from puerto vallarta) for about a week, which turned out to be about five days too long. a less antsy person may have enjoyed it a bit more, but there was not much to do besides walk on the beach, which is not particularly picturesque once you stray away from the hotel, and which we avoided in the middle of the day due to the heat. mosquitos were a major problem, especially in the dinner area; we left covered in bites. definitely bring insect repellent. the electricity-powered bed-side fans ran from ~9pm to 6am, but the generator seemed a bit spotty, as the fans frequently turned off in the middle of the night, and we would wake up quite overheated. on the other hand, the food was absolutely fantastic, unlike anything we've had before, very fresh and innovative, and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. we went at the end of may; perhaps the heat and mosquitos are better during another time of year.

“Peaceful => blissed out”

Hotelito Desconocido

Wow! We had seen some reviews and some photos, but Hotelito exceeded our already-high expectations. After arriving from a 2-hour drive from the PV airport, going through the Hotelito main gate was like discovering a Mexican eden... rustling palms, pounding surf, and an all-bird orchestra.

Stunning location. Rooms are rustic but comfortable and romantic. We stayed on the beach side and adored it. After a day or so, we were completely relaxed and felt like a part of the "family": the great team that keeps this hotel running so well.

Typical day: Have coffee and cookies delivered to your room. Visit the stables and organic gardens, or wander the 40 miles of beach that are almost completely empty. Kayak around the estuary and try to find a pink Spoonbill. Lounge by the pool or on the beach and sample the snacks sent out from the kitchen. Nap on your outdoor shaded bed. Send some baby turtles into the surf, and hope they have long lives. Shower while watching the sunset. Take the rowboat over to dinner and marvel at the stars. Come back to a candle-lit room, listen to the ocean and sleep...

The food was terrific, which was a relief since there aren't any other options nearby. Very fresh, varied every day, healthy, tasty.

The birds are amazing; bring a guidebook and a pair of good binoculars. A guide will give you an early-morning bird tour on the estuary if you want.

A few cautions: this is NOT the place for you if:
1) you want to bring your children (they will be bored), or
2) you want to be entertained (no nightlife, no TV, minimal activities) or
3) you really want to swim in the ocean -- it's very rough here, no swimming allowed.
4) you need a hairdryer, mints on your pillow, midnight room service, or air conditioning -- it's just not that kind of place.

We loved it and hope to return soon...

“extraordinary”

This was an extraordinary experience in every way. As others have described, you have your choice of estuary side bungalows set on stilts over the water, or beach front bungalows set right on the sand facing the dramatic Pacific. I stayed on the ocean side and would do so again. The weather was perfect - warm days made comfortable by a fairly constant breeze and cool evenings (bring a warm sweater and/or wrap) which made for a sound sleep. The mosquito netting on the beds provided lovely atmosphere (along with the many votive candles lit at dusk in the rooms), but I never saw one of the pesky critters (and if they are in the neighborhood, they find me!).

This is decidedly NOT a resort for those who require the trappings and diversions of traditional luxury hotels. There are a few "organized" activities - horsebackriding on the beach stands out, fishing, kayaking, canoing and the spa, however, the true point of Hotelito is relaxation and rejuvenation - away from TV, telephone, cell phone, blackberry and of course electricity. On the subject of electricity - I truly never missed it. Bring a flashlight if you like to read at night - the hotel provides a small one, but a bigger one makes things easier.

Food is very plentiful and fresh, morning coffee and biscuits in your room, full breakfast in the main dining area (estuary side), early afternoon snack on the beach, late afternoon lunch at the "beach club" and cocktails and dinner back on the estuary side (being rowed across while looking at the endless stars is a treat!).

Among the holiday week guests were many repeat visitors and it was an eclectic group, mostly American or US based, all friendly and open to meeting new people - different groups formed for most meals.

Hotelito surroundings and staff provide a unique and special time away from time and I plan to return next year for more - not sure what I did other than my morning rides, but whatever it was, it was wonderful!

“Magic!”

I can't say enough good things about this place. We were greeted with hot towels and friendly Abdul giving us a tour of the grounds. The place was beautiful. Pictures don't do it justice. The area is on 40 miles of beach and just has an aura of peacefulness and love. The beach houses were the best as they had the nicest view. There were so many birds! And we got to release turtles into the sea!

The food was great, although a little too much for me. The massages from Cassandra were awesome. I recommend the deep tissue massage. I think 4 days would be the max to spend there as there aren't much activities to be done there, but that's not the point of this place. Lounging and more lounging is the point!
I love it! I'll go back in a few years but it's one of the best places I've ever stayed. And I've been around the world!
