We stayed in off-season in September 2006, in a brand new Sky Cabana 4.
PROS:
Cabana $ had a stunning view of the water, it was directly on the beach. The front balcony had a great 2 person hammock that we lived in. Everything inside the cabana was new(new bathroom, new floors..
etc. )so it was well maintained and we didnt have the problems others are listing. The view from the rooftop balcony on the cabana was amazing and we were provided 2 lounger chairs. At night we had a gorgeous view of the stars. GREAT snorkeling a 2 minute walk up the beach and a dive shop at the base of our cabana stairs, literally. Bring your own snorkeling gear and save some $$ since you will want to snorkel evreyday, there is so much to see.
-I didnt want to spend the time taking a dive class so we walked up the beach toward West Bay and found a Snuba outfit (its like scuba diving without the class but you are attached to a long oxygen hose that leads up to a floating tank above you. you can go down 15-20 feet I think...). It was great and effortless BUT I would caution anyone who doesnt know anything about diving to trust the young man who led us on our tour, ask for a more experienced person, or someone
could get hurt. My boyfriend is a master diver with the military so I felt safe and he was able to watch out for me. he was also able to tell me and our guide that the tanks were running out of air. It may have been a communication problem also since the young guide spoke little English. Either way we had a blast but I would caution you none the less.
-Resturant staff at the small outdoor resturanti/tiki bar is nice, they became like friends to us. We loved the local breakfast
"balliadas"(I am not sure of the spelling....but they were our favorite) with a homemade tortilla filled with scrambled eggs, crisp bacon and white cheese.. Nothing fancy but great. The dishes served were simple and good and inexpensive. We rarely ate out anywhere else. Most nights we had cocktails at night and played poker in the bar looking at the water with another couple we had met, we RELAXED.
-We had a great workout everyday by exiting the property and running up the hills to the left of Fosters. It is quiet at daybreak with only the workers going to work. We also made the 25 minute walk up the beach(can get rocky at times... if your not into walking or hiking take a water taxi) to West Bay and found it to be nothing that
interested us. We didnt come for bars and souveneir shacks, we came for reef and beach and quiet nights together. The best thing we did was have the office staff rent us a Jeep and have it delivered to Fosters. Obviously, negotiate the rate ahead of time. We did and got a great deal. We went out all over the island, off road too. It was awesome. We headed out to the town by the airport and bought great rum cheap and food for our mini fridge. We found a great american bakery, I cannot remember the town, but they are New Yorkers and the wife makes a mean bagel and brownies!! Ask Leslie and she will know. This place is worth the trip!!
CONS: ***Remember, this is an island. Anyone who has visited the carribean knows there is a more relaxed attitude on any islands. You expect it....having said that:
-Upon Arrival at the airport there was a LONG wait (over an hour)to process through the immigration line, and it was HOT so dress appropriately for hot, steamy conditions indoors without a/c. Ask anyone for the Fosters driver and you will be quickly shown the way, he was outside the airport doors.
-There was ongoing construction on a building next door that was a few feet away from our Cabana 4. Check before you arrive to be sure that any construction is over. We headed out of our cabana pretty early in the day but if you plan on spending time indoors(or an afternoon nap as we tried a few times...) you may want to verify that construction is over.
-The island electric company itself has problems and shuts off the electricity at times. A local told us that. So, when the electricity did go off at times we were understanding since it wasnt like Foster himself caused it. Yes, it can be inconvenient since you need electricity for water, plumbing and most importantly air conditioning. My only suggestion would be for Foster to invest in a generator that would actually turn on so that at least the basics like a/c and plumbing are available. We dealt with it by heading out to the beach, It was only frustrating when it was late afternoon and we were heading in from the beach and wanted a shower and some a/c!
Yes, the mosquitos and sand fleas or whatever they are are horrendous! BUT, bring some bug spray and you will be fine and be covered from head to toe, even at breakfast. Do not waste your money on the local cactus spray they sell around there, it doesnt work. Bring your own good spray .
Fosters is not the Riitz Carlton but that isnt what we wanted. I have stayed in luxury hotels around the world for work and on our vacation we wanted to go back to the basics and enjoy the people, the beach, and the island. If you do have any problems, talk to Foster or Leslie. They will do whatever they can. Leslie was great to us as were all the staff. Go there to relax with the person you are with and you will not be let down.
