my husband and i stayed at fosters, february 2007. 2 weeks in the treehouse. the accomodations were quite rustic and not for the faint of heart. but if you want a once in a lifetime experience, and are not afraid of getting out of your comfort zone...go for it. we both agree that our time spent there was both serene and way out there. go for it!! lynn and kevin grand junction colorado

“We loved Foster's”

Foster's West Bay

Jun 10, 2007

Hands down, it was the most relaxing vacation yet.
They treated us like family from the time we got off the plane to the time we got back on. We were lucky enough to be the first to stay in the new Sky Cabana, that we loved. Very, very romantic. Foster asked us everyday if everything was OK or if there was anything that we needed. We told him that it could use some more water pressure and the next morning he installed a larger pump. The cleaning ladies kept it spotless and his sons and staff kept us intertained.
The food at Foster's was some of the best we had on the trip. The Seafood Platter for $22 was our favorite and it is enough to feed 2 people.
My fiancee was leary about traveling to some place as exotic and remote as Roatan. She had never left the states before or even been on a plane. But she loved every minute of it and can't wait to return. She said the people on Roatan were the nicest people that she had ever met.

“Relaxed in Sky Cabana 4”

Foster's West Bay

Mar 30, 2007

We stayed in off-season in September 2006, in a brand new Sky Cabana 4.
PROS:
Cabana $ had a stunning view of the water, it was directly on the beach. The front balcony had a great 2 person hammock that we lived in. Everything inside the cabana was new(new bathroom, new floors..
etc. )so it was well maintained and we didnt have the problems others are listing. The view from the rooftop balcony on the cabana was amazing and we were provided 2 lounger chairs. At night we had a gorgeous view of the stars. GREAT snorkeling a 2 minute walk up the beach and a dive shop at the base of our cabana stairs, literally. Bring your own snorkeling gear and save some $$ since you will want to snorkel evreyday, there is so much to see.

-I didnt want to spend the time taking a dive class so we walked up the beach toward West Bay and found a Snuba outfit (its like scuba diving without the class but you are attached to a long oxygen hose that leads up to a floating tank above you. you can go down 15-20 feet I think...). It was great and effortless BUT I would caution anyone who doesnt know anything about diving to trust the young man who led us on our tour, ask for a more experienced person, or someone
could get hurt. My boyfriend is a master diver with the military so I felt safe and he was able to watch out for me. he was also able to tell me and our guide that the tanks were running out of air. It may have been a communication problem also since the young guide spoke little English. Either way we had a blast but I would caution you none the less.
-Resturant staff at the small outdoor resturanti/tiki bar is nice, they became like friends to us. We loved the local breakfast
"balliadas"(I am not sure of the spelling....but they were our favorite) with a homemade tortilla filled with scrambled eggs, crisp bacon and white cheese.. Nothing fancy but great. The dishes served were simple and good and inexpensive. We rarely ate out anywhere else. Most nights we had cocktails at night and played poker in the bar looking at the water with another couple we had met, we RELAXED.
-We had a great workout everyday by exiting the property and running up the hills to the left of Fosters. It is quiet at daybreak with only the workers going to work. We also made the 25 minute walk up the beach(can get rocky at times... if your not into walking or hiking take a water taxi) to West Bay and found it to be nothing that
interested us. We didnt come for bars and souveneir shacks, we came for reef and beach and quiet nights together. The best thing we did was have the office staff rent us a Jeep and have it delivered to Fosters. Obviously, negotiate the rate ahead of time. We did and got a great deal. We went out all over the island, off road too. It was awesome. We headed out to the town by the airport and bought great rum cheap and food for our mini fridge. We found a great american bakery, I cannot remember the town, but they are New Yorkers and the wife makes a mean bagel and brownies!! Ask Leslie and she will know. This place is worth the trip!!

CONS: ***Remember, this is an island. Anyone who has visited the carribean knows there is a more relaxed attitude on any islands. You expect it....having said that:
-Upon Arrival at the airport there was a LONG wait (over an hour)to process through the immigration line, and it was HOT so dress appropriately for hot, steamy conditions indoors without a/c. Ask anyone for the Fosters driver and you will be quickly shown the way, he was outside the airport doors.
-There was ongoing construction on a building next door that was a few feet away from our Cabana 4. Check before you arrive to be sure that any construction is over. We headed out of our cabana pretty early in the day but if you plan on spending time indoors(or an afternoon nap as we tried a few times...) you may want to verify that construction is over.
-The island electric company itself has problems and shuts off the electricity at times. A local told us that. So, when the electricity did go off at times we were understanding since it wasnt like Foster himself caused it. Yes, it can be inconvenient since you need electricity for water, plumbing and most importantly air conditioning. My only suggestion would be for Foster to invest in a generator that would actually turn on so that at least the basics like a/c and plumbing are available. We dealt with it by heading out to the beach, It was only frustrating when it was late afternoon and we were heading in from the beach and wanted a shower and some a/c!
Yes, the mosquitos and sand fleas or whatever they are are horrendous! BUT, bring some bug spray and you will be fine and be covered from head to toe, even at breakfast. Do not waste your money on the local cactus spray they sell around there, it doesnt work. Bring your own good spray .
Fosters is not the Riitz Carlton but that isnt what we wanted. I have stayed in luxury hotels around the world for work and on our vacation we wanted to go back to the basics and enjoy the people, the beach, and the island. If you do have any problems, talk to Foster or Leslie. They will do whatever they can. Leslie was great to us as were all the staff. Go there to relax with the person you are with and you will not be let down.

“Stay somewhere else!”

Foster's West Bay

We met up with 2 other couples and stayed 5 nights in cabana #1. The cabana was adequate but rested on the edge of a swampy pit with plenty of hungry mosquitoes. Due to the “100% non-refund” policy we reserved only one night because we didn’t want to provide our Master Card number to a place/person we didn’t know. It turned out that the owner of the place was actually quite nice. The beach was lovely when not crowed with cruise ship and all-inclusive guests.

Upon arrival, we decided to stay 4 additional nights to be with our friends. On our 5th day we spent the day touring the island. We returned to the resort to discover that our belongings had been moved into our friend’s cabana because ours had been double-booked. I was upset, but didn’t want to spoil my holiday and took it all in stride. I didn’t appreciate someone touching my things, but the response I got from management was “we let the American girl move your belongings”. Not a nice surprise for us or our friends.

One good thing, we booked a suite for our first night but we were “upgraded” to a cabana for no extra charge, but then they tried to gouge us $60 U.S. for a 5km taxi ride to town! If they phoned a taxi for us they charged $2.00 for the call, and the internet cost $6.00 per hour and at other times it was free. The food in the restaurant was awful. Breakfast was good, but don’t waste your money on lunch or dinner. Not much to do here, stay in the West end.

Management Response
Roatanhope, management
(Management representative)
Nov 13, 2007
90% of Fosters reservations are made well in advance and Fosters can only guarantee a reservation with a deposit. In this case, the guests had reserved one night, but decided to stay 4 nights more. Managment had repeatedly told this guest that there was a reservation for the Cabana #1 on their last night and that if they wished to stay longer, we could accommodate them in a different cabana. On the day of the new arrival, the guests were told again that we could move them to a different cabana if they could please move their belongings by noon. The guests ignored this request and did not return until evening. Fosters management had no choice, due to the reserved booking in this particular cabana , but to move their belongings to another unit to prepare for the new guests who had a booking for this Cabana.

“Treehouse Terrors”

Foster's West Bay

2 of 5 stars

The treehouse is interesting but, as usual, the advertising doesn't quite measure up to what you get.

First off, it's in the middle of their parking lot (did they forget to mention that on their website?). This is not too bad once you get up in the thing because it is quite a bit up there (maybe 25 feet or so). It also overlooks their restaurant/bar (not bad for us because it was a slow night).

Second, the "private" toilet is only hidden from the rest of the room by a shower curtain. Okay, what did you expect from a treehouse? But they should at least let you know about this beforehand. The toilet is only private from the world outside the treehouse.

Third, the bed... don't lift the fitted sheet to look at it. Don't do it. It's disgusting. Way beyond needing replacing.

Fourth, and probably most important, the railing leading up to the treehouse is rotten in some places. It was definately not over-engineered so this is an issue. The rest of the treehouse appears to be safe.

So, what's good about it? It's way up in a mango tree. It would be fun to pick mangos when in season (July I think). The fan over the bed did the job. There was fresh water, refrig, coffee maker, towels, light, toilet, toilet paper and a sink (although in the morning the power went out which rendered everything inoperable).

Bottom line: it needs work. Replace the bed. Take out the glass table beside the bed because it just takes up space. Replace the refrig with something half it's size. Put walls around the toilet to keep it from looking like a prison cell. Replace the rotten railing before someone falls to their death. Rip down that wooden thing on top of the roof before it falls on someone. Replace the hammock which is mildewed and ripped. And sand off the grafitti (yes we all know Brooklyn is #1 but you don't have to bring a sharpie on your vacation and tell the world).

At the very least Fosters should remove the false advertising from the website and add a photo of the toilet in the corner.
