Taxis and rental cars are great ways to get around most tourist destinations.  Southampton however, and Bermuda in general does not have rental car agencies.

The Bermuda government only allows its local residents one vehicle per family household.  On top of this, by law tourists are not allowed to drive cars of any sort.  This means that there are no rental car agencies on any of the islands. The law is in place for two main reasons, the first being traffic control over the roads.  The second reason is that roads in Bermuda are generally in poor condition and very narrow.  It would not be safe for tourists to drive in these conditions, and many dangerous situations are avoided by this law.  There are however alternatives for visitors who insist on driving themselves around.  Motorbikes are widely available for hire.  If considering this option, note that many motorbike accidents occur due to the road conditions, so be careful and always wear a helmet.

Taxis are available and are quite convenient considering rental cars are not an option.  To arrange taxi transportation, contact an attendant at any hotel.  Many drivers are also qualified to be tour guides (signified by a blue flag on the hood).  The hourly rate for one to four passengers is $36.50 USD.  Distance based rates are also available, but are rather expensive.  If price is a factor, consider alternative forms of transportation such as public busses, which are cheap and convenient with routes serving the majority of tourist destinations.
