The main event of the Barbados horse racing season is the Sandy Lane Gold Cup (formerly the Cockspur Gold Cup), which attracts entrants from across the Caribbean and jockeys from the United Kingdom and Canada. It is usually the 2nd Saturday in March and the First Prize which is a authenic Gold Cup produced in the United Kingdom, is specially flown to the island now on British Airways and flies in First. Prior to that, it arrived aboard the Concorde but as everyone knows, it has been retired.
The Barbados Rally Carnival is usually held towards the end of May each year and attracts crews from around the world to compete in both a rallysprint event, held at the Vaucluse Raceway, and also in Rally Barbados the following weekend. Rally Barbados (formerly the Texaco All-Stage) has, from its inception, been the largest and most prestigious rally in the Caribbean and is held on closed sections of public road throughout the island. Please see the Barbados Rally Carnival website and the Rally Barbados website.
Lasting for approximately 5 weeks, and commencing in July, Crop Over is a Barbadian festival celebrating the end of the local sugar cane crop harvest - hence it's name. If you have never experienced Grand Kadooment Day, then you've been missing out on one of life's great treasures. A summer street carnival, filled with people consumed with "festival fever", dancing to Caribbean soca music and wearing spectacular, multicolored costumes and body paint. It's the climax of the Crop Over festival - "sweet fuh days" - in Barbados.
Colour, culture and heritage (tuk bands, land ship, stilt-walkers), music (calypso, tuk, ring bang and steelpan), alcohol (locally brewed beer and rum) along with energy, friendly spirited people and fantastic summer weather, are all combined to create the Caribbean's ultimate festival -"more than a carnival, sweet fuh days".
Crop Over was resurrected in 1974 from a multi-decade hibernation that began in the 1940's due to hardships of the time and the world war. Since then, it has grown steadily into the island's premiere event, attracting thousands of new and repeat visitors annually. The cultural diversity of the island is showcased throughout the festival through exhibitions, concerts, street markets, parades and of course mega dust-to-dawn parties.
The National Independence Festival of Creative Arts (NIFCA) generally runs throughout the month of November and attracts Barbadians of all ages to showcase their talent.
The seven disciplines of NIFCA are – Dance, Drama/Speech, Music, Literary Arts, Culinary Arts, Visual Arts and Craft and Photography.
The month is filled with many performances, art exhibitions, demonstrations etc and closes with a grand finale with a gala presentation in which the finalists are featured.
