Resorts in the Dominican do accept Pesos (the local curerency) but the American Dollar is wanted and widely accepted.  Other currencies are not wanted at the resorts.  A lot of guests find out they cannot exchange their country currency at the hotel and have to make arrangements to do so at a local bank.  People tend to get a better deal with goods when they use American dollars with the vendors.

A good tip is if your going to barter with a vendor, do it with American dollars where you will get the most for your money.  Also, beware to bring sufficient amounts of cash with you as some ATM have only a $250.00 daily withdrawl limit and this may cause an inconvienience to you. Better to be prepared than left without.  Be sure to check the currency exchange rates for the time you are in the country so you know exactly how much you are paying for goods before you make a deal with any vendor.  A good place to do this is and any currency exchange page on the internet.

BEWARE, all banks and machines give Pesos, if you want US you must purchase it at the going rate which is high, up to 42% some times so deal with the pesos or bring enough US money for the trip. You also may be SHOCKED,  to find that each time that you go to the bank machine the fee is $5 for the withdrawal but it's not indicated on the receipt! Plan your money needs carefully!
