Located approximately 7 miles east of the big island of Puerto Rico, Vieques is about 21 miles long and 5 miles wide with a mountain range that runs down the middle.

Public transportation is almost nonexistent in this sleepy location, and many visitors rent cars and jeeps for the duration of their stay.   If you opt to stay in Isabel Segunda or Esperanza, you might be able to do without a car. From those locations, it is possible to get around by foot. And to visit the beach, you can take a “publico,” a nine-passenger van that runs regular routes around the island. Be aware that these publicos are not always dependable, though big tips may help.
