The Museum of the Regiments has recently had a shift in focus and, consequently, a name change. At present, the museum has four permanent galleries, dedicated to four regiments: the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI), the Calgary Highlanders, the King's Own Calgary Regiment (aka 103rd Regiment (Calgary Rifles), 14th Canadian Armoured Regiment/Calgary Tanks) and the Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians). However, an expansion to the museum will see inclusion of Air Force and Navy units, which are not organized into regiments. This necessitated the renaming of the museum to the Military Museums in June 2006 by the Countess of Wessex, Sophie Rhys-Jones (wife of Prince Edward). When work is complete in 2008, the expanded museum will be the second-largest military museum in Canada (after the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa).
The museum, with its dioramas of various scenes, from the battle of the Walcheren Causeway, to life in a WWI trench, is sure to engage anyone with an interest in Canadian military history. Outside on the musem grounds are a number of tanks on permanent static display, while a Sherman Firefly tank is the centrepiece of a life-size diorama in the main entryway. Docents are on hand to answer questions.
