The Tusket is a major river system and drainage basin in Yarmouth County. It has numerous branches and associated rivers, and also flows through a series of lakes. The Tusket is a salmon river, especially in it lowers reaches, and is wide and a typical tidal river where it meets the coast. There is one, small hyrdoelectric dam that drains Vaughn Lake and Raynard's Lake, both of which are large and beautiful. Fishing in the Tusket can be excellent--it was named one of the Top 10 Fishing Spots in the World by the London Guardian in 2006. The upper Tusket has brook trout in extensive wilderness and forest areas. In particular, the East Branch of the Tusket is an important waterway.
This land is part of the Tobeatic Wilderness Area. This protected area (1000 square kilometres / 386 square miles) is the only remaining wilderness in Nova Scotia. The head waters of the East Branch are but a canoe portage away from the Shelburne River, the most remote wilderness river in Nova Scotia. This "Canadian Heritage River" links the Tusket watershed with Kejimkujik National Park. The whole area forms parts of a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
