What is a Fringe Festival?

It is a performing arts festival that involves music, dance, and theatre performances. Such festivals have been going on throughout Europe and North America for close to 50 years. Now it's Windsor's turn! This is the first annual Fringe that will not only hold performing arts in what is known as the Theatre Fringe, but a plethora of activities starting July 18 and running through to July 27.

What other activities are there?

The Windsor International Fringe Festival is a 5-in-1 special. There will be 5 festivals going on throughout the week in order to attract as much of the community as possible! The Windsor Fringe includes:

  • The International Buskers Festival includes street performers from all around North America that will perform in Charles Clark Square from July 24 - 27. Free.
  • The Chalk and Chocolate Festival is a unique and exciting event merging art and chocolate. Street closures will occur July 19 at Chatham and Pelissier. Free.
  • Buskin' to the Beat is a combination of music and dance from all across the globe. Street closures will occur on July 20 at Chatham and Pelissier. Free.
  • The Visual Fringe is Downtown Windsor businesses teaming with local artists, displaying their pieces in storefront windows. July 19 to 27. Free.
  • The Theatre Fringe is a combination of 27 theatre companies that will offer the community and visitors alike a range of performances (from Family Entertainment to Mature Content) from July 19 to 27.

    The theatre venues for the week include: The Boom Boom Room, The Room, The Art Gallery of Windsor, and The Daniel Patrick Kelly Theatre (The Family Entertainment venue) as well as The Joy Family Theatre (both located at the Capitol Theatre). Adults must purchase one (1) $3 Fringe Button to see the theatre performances as well as a $9 ticket. Kids (14yrs and under) Do NOT require a FRINGE BUTTON, but tickets are $5 for them to take in any performance. Advance tickets and special 5 and 10 show passes can be purchased at the Chrysler Theatre Box Office or online.  'Day Of' tickets can be purchased one (1) hour before a performance at the venue where the performance is located.

Why do adults have to purchase a Fringe Button?

The Fringe Button is a way to sustain future Fringe Festivals. With all ticket sales from The Theatre Fringe going back to the performers, the $3 Fringe Button will be helpful in bringing the Fringe to downtown Windsor every year. With your Fringe Button you not only receive entry into theatre performances but discounts at downtown Fringe-friendly establishments. The majority of Fringe-friendly establishments  are offering 15% off food come to downtown Windsor to see an outdoor free event, have a meal and take in a performance!!
