Cheltenham is a fairly safe place to visit.  Having said this, there are certain precautions that should be taken in order to ensure a safe trip through this English town.  Like always, common sense is the most important tool used to stay safe.

Don’t carry around large amounts of money, and avoid wearing expensive jewelry or looking flashy.  Although getting robbed is not a major concern, drawing un-needed attention is never a good idea.  Try blending into the crown instead of sticking out.

Avoid traveling alone at night.  This is a general recommendation for any unfamiliar area, but should be followed in Cheltenham as well.  If staying with a group is not an option, make sure to take safe modes of transportation such as personal vehicles or taxis.  Walking alone at night is never a good idea, especially for women, but if it is unavoidable, make sure to remain in lighted areas.

Pickpockets are not a major concern, but they do work in this town.  They mainly focus on crowded areas such as markets and train/bus stations.  In these areas, men should carry wallets in front instead of rear pockets, and women should keep bags and purses close by their sides.

The Cheltenham government has an organization called The Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership , which works on protecting people from criminal and antisocial behavior.  Visit the above link for more information.

In the case of an emergency while visiting Cheltenham, dial 999 or 112 from any phone.

There are no foreign embassies located in Cheltenham, but most countries have a location within England.   Check out this List of Embassies for location and contact information.
