A perfect day trip from Arhus is a visit to the quaint island of Odense. Odense is famous as the brithplace of Hans Christian Anderson, Denmark’s famed writer (asides from the bible, Anderson’s works are the most translated books in the world). The old part of the town of Odense is composed of picturesque, tiny houses, cute cafes to relax outside with a heavy brew or a light book, pedestrian sidewalks and restaurants that serve fresh local seafood and other more hearty meat dishes. Odense also contains a museum dedicated to Hans Christian Anderson. The whole city appears to be in honor of the writer, with a statue of the writer in front of the townhall. The city can be easily navigated in one day. In addition, the city itself is in the vicinity of many nice beaches as well where there are many leisure activities (like camping and biking) offered.
It is a convenient trip to Odense from Arhus as well. It takes approximately 2 to 4 hours to drive; in addition, there are plenty of direct trains, which take about 1:45 hours each way. One should plan ahead if one plans to stay over night in Odense, however, since it is a smaller town, it does not have as many options for hotels and hostels and the best can fill up quickly depending on the season.
