Perhaps the most famous and well attended event in the Venice/Mestre area is Carnival. Carnival, known also as Mardi Gras in French, is observed by Roman Catholic Christians as a way to celebrate the pleasures of life before the self-restrictive period of Lent. It is traditionally held on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, when Lent begins, each year. Carnival is celebrated in locations throughout the world, most notably in the Caribbean, Brazil, and New Orleans. Each place which celebrates Carnival does so with their own traditions and style.
The Venice/Mestre Carnival is perhaps most famous for its masks. Although masks and masquerading are popular traditions in other places where Carnival is celebrated, Venetian carnival masks have been highly coveted and celebrated for their beauty and craftsmanship for hundreds of years. They are highly collectible.
Much planning goes into every Carnivale celebration in Venice/Mestre and the event is very popular. Those who would like to attend the festivities (parades, parties, street fairs, balls), which go on for several days leading up to the event, should make hotel reservations and travel arrangements early.
