Although evidence shows that the area where the city is located today had been inhabited for thousands of years, modern history of the area begins around the middle of the 13th century when Alfonso X (a Spanish monarch) conquered the city in 1264.  The exact boundary of the city of Jerez for a long time was uncertain, as the land was bordered by the feuding Moorish Caliphs and Christian Monarchs.

A select group of Jews who lived in the city were assigned land after the time of the invasion.

At the end of the 13th century, the Jews living in Jerez paid King D. Sancho a large sum to set their people free.  Permission was granted by the king, and the Jews received all of the same rights that the Christians of the area had.

Jerez De La Frontera has a long and storied history of one of its major exports, Sherry.  Made in the city for hundreds of years, the world began finding out about this sweet wine around the 14th century.  The wine spread to England as well, and was loved by even William Shakespeare.

Flamenco dancing has a long and storied past in Jerez De La Frontera.   It is said to have been brought there, as well as through other areas of Andalusia by bands of gypsies.
