Although many people enjoy the Wailea area of Maui,  Kanaapali or Kapalua are also great spots. There are numerous stopping options including the shops at Whalter's Village. The State Park over east, toward the airport, should never be missed.  If you can make a short hike, do so up toward the Iao needle.  Great pictures.  The Volcano  in the center of the island is another "don't miss" experience.  No need especially to get there at sunrise, as lots of foks like to do.  Chances are it will be cloudy, and you won't get the sunrise, and you also have to watch the bicyclers on their way down.  The trip to Hana (take your sea sick pills) runs you around dozens of curves, but is worth it.  Go on and take a quick look at the great National Park about five miles south of Hana.  Be sure and check your rental car fine print if you want to continue on around the island, as the roads are bumpy, to say the least.
