In Botswana, the climate is semi-arid, since most of the country is desert plains. Thus, most of the year, the weather can be classified as hot and dry. In fact, realistically, there is little variation between summer and winter temperatures. In the summer, the mean minimum and maximum temperature ranges are approximately 65°F to 89.6°F (in January); Then, in the dry winter season, temperatures can vary from 41°F to 73°F. In the winter months, the low temperatures occur at night, when the desert can become frigid. During this time, travelers should be sure to sleep in layers and carry heated blankets.
November to February is the hottest and the wettest months. However, generally in Botswana, the seasons are very variable and unpredictable. Generally, however, the rains start in October or November and remains through March or April. Regardless, throughout this time, there can be long, dry spells.
Summer is extremely hot with high humidity lasting through the mornings. During this time, visitors should be sure to start out early in the morning before the heat can become rather unbearable. Also, in the summer, the cooler nights come as a relief from the hot and humid days.
The best time to visit is April to October which is spring or autumn. During this time, the days are sunny but not too hot. Evenings can get very cool throughout the year.
