Taxis are mostly in the form of three-wheelers, or trishaws. These are a good means of transportation for very short distances, and it is easy enough to hail them from the road. Since there are no meters, make sure to agree on a rate before setting off, and if you bring any bags keep them close to you. There are also a few modern taxi companies with radio-controlled, efficiently metered Japanese cars that operate in Colombo and the surrounding suburbs.

If you prefer, you can rent your own vehicle. But before you get behind the wheel, keep in mind that there are no highways, and that local drivers have no road etiquette. Be prepared for extreme rudeness, including constant and unsignaled lane changes, unsignaled turns, and utter disregard for right of way and speed limits. And watch out for pedestrians who frequently walk along the edge of the road, or right down the middle, as well as cattle, dogs, and elephants. Drivers must be at least 25 and have an international driving license. You may instead opt to hire a car and driver. Chauffer rates are very reasonable, especially considering that most drivers are locals who speak English, and are happy to act as a guide, as well. In either case, check over the general quality of the car, including the air-conditioning, before handing over your money.

Another option is to rent a motorbike, and several companies offer rentals on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Of course you must consider the same cautions as if driving a car.
