Only people with a lot of guts and ardor for risk should consider renting a car in India. There are traffic rules but it is a known fact that no one abides by them. It is also safe to assume that every main road will be packed with carts, rickshaws, trucks, goats, motorcycles, cows and dogs. Also the major highways are renowned for accidents and the ‘ambulance’ service is not reliable at times; often these accidents tragically end in a death. Thus the best way to travel in Delhi is by taxi or hired car. When taking a taxi visitors should be aware that most drivers say the meter is not working or if it is working, it is rigged to give a higher fare. Therefore, it is recommended to negotiate the fee before beginning the drive to the destination.

Sometimes, a hired car from a hotel is a more desired and trusted form of transport, if more expensive.

When an experienced driver chauffeurs travelers around Delhi and to nearby destinations, it costs about   Rs. 400 for four hours or 40 km (25 mi) and about Rs. 600 for eight hours or 80 km (50 mi) for sightseeing in an Ambassador without air-conditioning, the least expensive vehicle.
