Navigating Downtown Seattle on Foot
Downtown Seattle is laid out on a grid, and is easy to navigate on foot. North-south streets have numbers (eg, 1st Ave, 2nd Ave,) and East-west streets have names. Much of the "action" in Seattle is located between Jefferson and Pine Streets. Once you're in downtown Seattle, it's easy to figure out where you are if you remember this handy mnemonic: "Jesus Christ Made Seattle Under Pressure". This mnemonic is well-known in Seattle, so you won't look like a silly tourist if you are heard mumbling it out loud. The first letter in each word represents two adjacent streets, from south to north: Jefferson and James, Cherry and Columbia, Marion and Madison, Spring and Seneca, University and Union, and Pike and Pine. It's not necessary to memorize the order of the streets within each pair - you'll only be off by a block if you guess wrong! Thus, if you're on Cherry, and you want to find Seneca street, this mnemonic will tell you which direction to go (north), and approximately how far you have to go (about five blocks).
If you're staying at one of the hotels in Seattle that offer a shuttle service, this is a great way to get around. The Hotel Edgewater has an excellent shuttle service to take you to and from the major Seattle attractions.
