Travel to and from Scranton is an easy endeavor, as the area is home to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, which is located just nine miles south of city limits. Scranton International is serviced by five major airlines—Delta, NWA, Continental, United, and US Airways—and is fairly high in traffic relative to most other airports in America its size.
The greater County of Lackawanna, of which Scranton is a part, is intra-connected thanks to the
County of Lackawanna Transit System (COLTS), which operates from Monday through Saturday—though it should be noted that this system is not terribly frequent, nor does it run on most major holidays. For schedule and fare information, go here.
If coming from, say, Ohio or New York, or anywhere else in the state of Pennsylvania, your best option for travel will probably be to drive in and out of town. Scranton is only 120 miles out from New York City, 125 miles from Philadelphia, and 240 from Washington DC, thus making car journeys a real option for getting to and from Scranton from many of the country’s most major metropolitan areas. If you are coming in from the north or the southwest, take I-81, if coming from the Southeast take 380, from the east take 84, and from the west take 80.
Major car rental companies servicing the area include Avis, Budget, Hertz, Alamo, and National.
Finally, direct passenger rail to and from New York City and Scranton should open up by 2010.
