An earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale struck the Chinese province of Sichuan on May 12. The official death toll is now more than 67,000, with 20,000 more missing. There is widespread destruction in Sichuan and nearby provinces.
The region has suffered a series of aftershocks that have destroyed some 420,000 homes. In addition, there is a risk of flooding in several areas. Police and military workers are assisting in search and relief operations, assisted by foreign aid workers from around the globe.
